Oates on the boil for Broncos win
A last-minute try by Corey Oates at Suncorp Stadium gave Brisbane Broncos victory 8-5 on Friday night against Penrith Panthers in what was mostly a very dull game.
But another not-so-dull moment occurred when Penrith back-rower Tyrone Peachy dropped player Adam Blair on his head.
At the 60th minute Peachey fumbled the ball but regained control only for Blair to rip it out of his hands.
Peachey approached Blair, gripping his legs and dropping him. Blair landed on his head and neck (pictured), all occurring after the whistle had blown – though Peachey said he ‘did not hear it’.
Fellow players quickly moved in and the crowd of 24,566 were vocal in calling for Peachey to be sent off.
Peachey stayed on the field but was put on report and later suspended for two weeks for a dangerous tackle.
The only other try of the match was scored by Brisbane winger Jordan Kahu at the end of the first half. Penrith’s injured full-back Matt Moylan kicked two penalties plus a field goal four minutes from full-time that had the Panthers in a winning position – until Corey Oates gave the home crowd the result they were waiting for.
The win kept Brisbane on top of the table at 14 points with seven wins, with Darius Boyd’s return to the team giving even further confidence for the games ahead.
