Garden gnome chess and giant scrabble

A curious crowd watch the letters fall into place in King George Square

Garden gnome chess and giant scrabble are part of a council-supported Games Night in King George Square.

Run on the last Thursday of each month, the free event kicked off yesterday with giant scrabble as the main attraction.

Game lovers also played cards, chess and Connect Four on the tables provided.

Organiser Amy Saunders started the social event to bring people from different backgrounds together with simple games.

“So many different people can play them,” she said.

Next month the event will feature garden gnome chess with a full cast of 38 gnome playing pieces. The event runs from 5pm to 9pm.

Miss Saunders and her friends make or buy all the games provided for the night. They plan game-making workshops to get the wider community involved.

Brisbane City Council provides some of the equipment and tables.
